Osman Özçay
Osman Özçay was born in 1963 in Caykara, in the district of Trabzon, Turkey. He completed his elementary and secondary schooling with his brother Mehmed and then joined the Islamic College of Urdumun in 1980 and then after 2 years transferred to the Divinity Faculty in the University of Marmara in Istanbul from where he graduated in 1986.
Osman Özçay was not initially interested in Calligraphy but was encouraged to learn by the Calligrapher Fuad Bashar while accompanying his brother Mehmed at their first meeting and began his first exercises in the Thuluth script.
After moving to Istanbul, Osman benefitted greatly from Professor Ugur Derman. The professor gave him a picture of a calligraphic panel which had been written by the great calligrapher Sami Efendi (1834-1912) for the public drinking fountain (sabil) in the New Mosque, this panel becoming Uthman's source of inspiration for his works in large thuluth script.
His close association with his brother and their discussions in the field of calligraphy were major factors in their development in the art. Like his brother, Osman Özçay's works have won awards in international competitions and has participated in various exhibitions both in Turkey and abroad. |
Mehmed Özçay
Mehmed Özçay was born in 1961 in Caykara, in the district of Tabzon, Turkey. His interest in calligraphy began while he was in secondary school and later while he was completing a degree in religious studies the he met the calligrapher Fuad Bashar in 1982. He began learning the naskh script from him and later progressed onto thulth. He graduated from the University of Ataturk in Irdurum in 1986 from whence he then moved to Istanbul where he met the Calligraphy expert at the Research Center for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA). Professor Derma became his teacher and guide in the art of calligraphy and through him was able to reach and elevated level of understanding and appreciation of the art.
He participated in the first and second international calligraphy competitions in 1986 organized by IRCICA. He won six prizes awarded for various scripts, including first in both naskh and thuluth. In 1992 he wrote a large Qur'an which was printed several times in various sizes. He has also participated in many exhibitions all over the Muslim World and is presently engaged in the process of producing a catalogue of his major works in the various scripts which is expected to contain one hundred examples of his work. |
Abbas Al-Baghdadi
Abbas Shakir al-Fattal, a.k.a. Baghdadi, was born in 1951 in the Rusafa district of Baghdad. His family were tradesmen and he learnt several trades, including carpentry and house painting. He then began the profession of being an artist but in 1969 he transferred his focus to calligraphy which he devoted himself to with a single mindedness until he became the leading calligrapher in Iraq. Having mastered the different calligraphic scripts and then teaching their basis and rules, a large number of students gathered around him from Iraq and other Arab countries. He was also sought by leading calligraphers in and out of the country.
From 1975 until the late eighties, he taught calligraphy and related arts at the Institute of Iraqi Calligraphers and was its president for two consecutive terms. Also, he was the official calligrapher to the presidential office and government institutions, preparing all important official documents.
He has participated over the years in calligraphy exhibitions and events around the world and has been on the committee of judges in assessing works in competitions.
Al-Baghdadi is distinguished in his career as a calligrapher in many areas, the most prominent of which are:
His concern for the teaching of calligraphy and making it accessible to the upcoming generation.
His complete adherence to the rules of classical calligraphy and his adverseness to "modern calligraphy," especially when its advocates never mastered the art in its traditional form.
Mastery in the arrangement of letters and words, resulting in unique compositions while conforming to the rules of calligraphy and retaining a clarity in readability.
He presently lives in Amman with his family, where he moved in 2003 after the invasion of Iraq. After opening a private studio, he continues to work and teach his students from both Jordan and outside of the country. |
